My First Golf Lesson Ever | One Bearded Golfer

Today I took my first golf lesson…ever. Sure, I’d received plenty off-the-cuff advice on my golf swing over the years. I’d read Ben Hogan’s and Harvey Penick’s . I’d even gone through a couple club fitting sessions. But this was my first experience intentionally setting aside my pride and reaching out for the help my golf game so desperately needed. My hope was that a professional eye could help shorten the distance between exasperation and serenity on the golf course.

I first saw golf clubs when my dad bought a set. I was about seven at the time. I had seen them in the garage for months before I got up the gumption to try them out. My dad knew I was messing with them, but they were too long and too heavy for a seven year old to swing. One Saturday after he had played, he gave me my first golf club, a cut down iron club which would be suitable for an 7 year old child to use. We went into the back yard to hit plastic golf balls. The balls had holes in them and went about 20 feet when struck. That Saturday was the beginning of my love affair with golf.

In 1958, I went to work in advertising for the Los Angeles Times and established my first golf handicap 18 at Green River Golf Club in Corona, Calif. In 1965, Arnold Palmer was the favorite in the Los Angeles Open. On the opening Thursday, I sneaked away from work and went out to Rancho Park, a famous public golf course, to follow my hero.
