Safety 1st Secure Top Bed Rail

I recently moved my daughter from her crib to a twin bed. I thought the size of the bed would be enough to keep her from falling out, but she takes so much stuff to bed with her, that sure enough, on the second night there was a loud 'THUMP' in the middle of the night, followed by wailing. She had fallen out. So the next day I hopped online looking for a bed rail. I read some reviews, and then went to a couple of different stores and found the Safety 1st Secure Lock Bed Rail at Wal-mart.

I liked that it wrapped around to the top of the mattress and firmly locked down. I bought it and brought it home, easily putting it together in about 15 minutes.

The rail is 42 inches long and the part above the mattress is 12 inches high. You slip the feet under the mattress and position the rail on top. There are 2 different adjusters, one that locks the rail into an upright position and another than locks the rail securely onto the top of the mattress. There are indicators for both areas to tell you it is in the proper position.

What I like: As I stated above, I liked that it sat on top of the mattress, rather than just sitting next to. I also liked how long it is. Just enough space at the end of the bed for my daughter to get in and out.

What I don't like: While this rail can be lowered for taking your child in and out of bed, it does stick out quite a bit from the mattress, requiring you either to step inside of the "cage" it creates, or reach over it to help your child. I've started just leaving it locked in place all the time and working around it. It's much easier than unlocking it every time.

Would I recommend this product? Yes

Price: about $30.00

Age range: 2 - 5 it's for children who have outgrown their cribs and are sleeping in their first big kid bed (twin sized or bigger)

As parents of young children, sometimes they end up in our bed, and since our bed is a queen it was definitely kind of cramped. Making it worse was that, due to my concern about them falling off, we would end up sleeping on the edges ourselves.

Since purchasing the Safety 1st Secure Top Bed Rail, our bed has *felt* much bigger because we have more *usable* space. Now my 2 1/2 year old can sleep close to the edge without me worrying about him falling off - so we all have more room and have more peaceful nights, even when he does end up in our bed!

After I got it properly on the mattress, I was really happy with how snug and secure it is. Especially, I was happy that there is no way for a little arm or leg to get caught in it. It really attaches well and is a very good and very safe design. Also, even when I pushed on it I felt that it would hold under pressure.

Cons: It is a little bit of a hassle to change the sheets as they need to go under the top clamp part. Also, my brother assembled it for me and apparently it wasn't very simple to put together. However, all in all this is a great product and I'm very happy that we purchased it. I anticipate that it will get years of use in our home.

  • Safety 1st Secure Top Bed Rail by Safety 1st

We had initially tried out this bed rail on a family trip to Disney World. The hotel provided this bedrail for my son's bed. I had used other safety 1st items before but never really considered them since I can never find the brand at my nearest babies r us or toys r us. When we bought our son his first twin sized bed, we searched for the Safety 1st Secure Top Bed Rail because of our experience with it in Florida. I had to order two of them online through Kmart and we have been so happy with it. Sometimes we catch our son sleeping with his face pressed up against it or his whole body against it. It definitely does what its supposed to. Not onl is it breathable but it holds my son's weight from falling out of bed. Though we remind him that he shouldn't sleep that way, I'm not aure he can control it while he is actually sleeping. We no longer have to worry about him falling out of bed. Great product!

We really like the Safety 1st Secure Top Bed Rail. My daughter is three and is still using it. She falls out a bed easily and we wanted something that would keep her secure and was still a breathable mesh so we did not have to worry if she got her face against it while she was sleeping. She climbs all over this bed rail to get in and out of bed and it is holding up great. I drag this along with us whenever we go to spend the night anywhere too, even hotels! It's legs fold in and make it easy to carry. It is difficult to secure yourself, but you definately want to make sure you get it secure, it slides out from between the mattresses too easily not to. It is not very expensive so that makes it a nice item to have when you are transitioning from a crib. The first one we bought was missing a peice so we had to exchange it so make sure you have all your parts before you put it together. It was very easy to assemble.
