NASHVILLE — Premature babies who hear their mothers singing lullabies through specially equipped pacifiers learn to suckle better and have their feeding tubes removed sooner, Vanderbilt University researchers have shown.

Pacifiers – Use Them, Then Lose ..

  • Mothers sing lullabies through specially equipped pacifiers
  • Premature babies were rewarded with lullaby when they suckled correctly
  • Feeding tubes were removed a week earlier for preemies with singing pacifiers

Pacifiers can interfere with ..

The babies who got the special pacifiers had their feedingtubes removed on average a week earlier than those who had the regular ones. They also atemore frequently and had a stronger sucking ability, and did not show additionalsigns of stress when they were using the pacifier. They were also in thehospital for shorter periods of time than the other preemies.

One of the challenges with premature babies (or premmies) is they do not eat well but a special pacifier that can play the mother's pre-recorded voice, may help solve the problem.
